Shel Silverstein, Nightmare Fodder

I’ve figured out why my little girl isn’t sleeping well.

Shel Silverstein.

Shel Silverstein, Nightmare Fodder

Imagine this face in the moonlight

Don’t get me wrong, I love Uncle Shelby and “The Giving Tree” is a great story, but that face!

I’ve thought of some ways to make Shel Silverstein less scary.

Nope.
She’ll just have to put the book cover-side up.
Can you think of a way to make Shel Silverstein less scary?

  1. Remove the book cover??? Other than that – I’ve got nothin’. I jumped a bit when I saw the picture myself….and it’s been 30 years or so since his books were on my nightstands.

  2. I have to asy I’m not a big Shel fan. How about switching to Lewis Carrol?

    Great redesign.

  3. Ok…get this…when I was a girl, HE WAS MY NEIGHBOR! He was truly nice. And unscary when I knew him…which was when he was much older than that scary picture.

    • Oh my goodness! If I knew that, I’d forgotten, Sarah!

I’ve always thought he must be a nice and clever man to have written such good books.

I wish you’d been able to ask him what’s up with that picture.

    • Texanna says:

That is so cool! Love his books. I need to get more for the boys. We only have A Light in the Attic right now (wish I knew what happened to my old ones!!)

    • Oh you’re coolness rating just went up by about 500.

  4. Stephanie (Just Me) says:

Yikes, after that clown photo I think *I’m* going to have nightmares!

  5. Haha! Too funny! It’s easy – replace it with a photo of Brad Pitt or some other GQ man – paste in on top of scary guy! Nuff said.

  6. Shellie The Thug Clown.

Don’t shove HIM in no clown car, or you’ll get worse than seltzer down your pants.

  7. icklepay says:

I’ve long wondered why on earth his publicist okayed that particular photo for the jacket of the book!

You might try shades, a ten gallon hat, and a bandanna over his mouth and nose…a bandanna with hearts and Hello Kitty or something…

  8. Too funny. I don’t think it is possible to make Shel Silverstein less scary. He’s one scary dude. It think it’s the facial hair.

  9. nI felt the same way as a kid. Love his stuff though. And it’s so cool to be able to share with my own kiddos.

  10. Dana says:

He really is terrifying. And the poetry, too, sometimes. Who says children need to read The Giving Tree, either?

  11. HEY. I thought I commented here. We have that exact book and my son took the dust jacket off himself with an explanation that had something to do with nightmares.

  12. Yep, I always thought that picture was a little scary looking! I love Shel though :) I would read his books over and over and over again!

  13. Creepy! That would definitely keep me up at night!

  14. baa-haaa!! I think you are on to something there.
